KANAYANKAVAYAL
KANAYANKAVAYAL -Gram Vihar By NABARD and Kerala HATS
Kanayankavayal is a village in Peruvanthanam Panchayat, Idukki district, where almost every household depends on farming for their livelihood. It is the second village in Idukki, after Vattavada , to practice agriculture without chemical fertilizers. Despite their commitment to natural farming, agriculture alone is no longer providing adequate income for the community.
Kanayankavayal, located in the scenic high ranges
of Idukki district, serves as a strategic transit point connecting several of
Kerala’s major hill destinations. Situated on the route linking Vagamon,
Panchalimedu, Parunthumpara, Thekkady, and Gavi, this serene village offers
travelers an ideal stopover to experience authentic rural life amidst misty
hills and cool breezes. Its central location makes it a convenient base for
tourists exploring the diverse attractions of Idukki—from the spiritual and panoramic
heights of Panchalimedu, the adventure trails of Vagamon, and the breathtaking
viewpoints of Parunthumpara, to the wildlife experiences of Thekkady and the
pristine forests of Gavi.
Seeking alternative livelihood options, local
farmers approached the Panchayat for support. One of the farmers’ clubs reached
out to Kerala HATS to explore new revenue opportunities that could emerge from
tourism integrated with agriculture.
On October 14, Kerala HATS conducted an awareness
session at St. Mary’s L.P. School Kanayankavayal from 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm. The
program focused on potential tourism development and interactive discussions
were held with the farmers on how they can benefit from this new direction.
During the awareness session conducted by Kerala
HATS on October 14 at St. Mary’s L.P. School, Kanayankavayal, several key
issues and challenges were identified through discussions with local farmers
and community members.
Lack
of Organized Tourism Infrastructure
Despite having rich natural
beauty—waterfalls, caves, grasslands, and viewpoints—the village lacks proper
tourism facilities such as signboards, resting areas, waste management systems,
and basic amenities for visitors.
Limited Market Access for Local Products
Farmers produce organic vegetables,
fruits, and spices, but have very few opportunities to market them directly to
consumers or tourists. There is no common marketing platform or cooperative
network in place.
Wastage of Agricultural Produce
Seasonal produce like mangoes and jackfruits are often
wasted due to lack of storage, processing, and value-addition facilities.
Poor Road Connectivity and Transportation
Many parts of the village remain difficult to access due
to poor internal roads, affecting both tourism and transportation of farm
goods.
Water Scarcity During Summer Months
After January, several areas face
acute water shortages, impacting agriculture and daily life. There is an urgent
need for water conservation and management measures.
Lack of Awareness and Training in Tourism
Activities
Local people have limited knowledge
about community-based tourism, homestay management, guiding, and eco-tourism
opportunities.
Unemployment and Migration of Youth
Due to lack of income-generating
opportunities, many young people migrate to nearby towns or other states for
work.
Environmental
Degradation
Unregulated waste disposal and lack of
awareness about eco-friendly practices are slowly affecting the natural beauty
and cleanliness of the area.
Lack of Institutional Support and Coordination
There is insufficient coordination
between local government, tourism departments, and community groups to
implement sustainable development initiatives.
Objective :
Sustainable Development of Homestays/Farm Stays in the
Kanayankavayal Region Through Tourism
At present, the five homestays in Kanayankavayal village are not included in
the official government classification. Additionally, several serviced villas
operating with panchayath licenses remain outside the classification system. All
of these villas are managed by individuals from outside Idukki district who do
not reside locally.
Our objective is to bring all currently unclassified accommodation units
under the official classification framework and to support the establishment of
at least 50 or more new classified homestays and farm stays within
Kanayankavayal village. This will ensure responsible tourism growth while
generating local employment and community-based economic benefits.
We aim to build a homestead-based tourism model that enables guests to enjoy
locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as farm-raised chicken, eggs and
milk. Beekeeping will be encouraged to support pollination and strengthen local
agriculture.
A strong digital marketing strategy will showcase Kanayankavayal homestays
to travellers from around the world.
We will provide awareness and training on responsible waste management,
professional guest handling and basic language skills to ensure a high-quality
guest experience and sustainable tourism future for the community.
Panchalimedu experiences a water scarcity period for about three months
after January each year. This challenge is not limited to Panchalimedu—many
surrounding areas also face similar shortages. To ensure water availability for
the community and visitors during the dry season, it is essential to implement
effective water conservation measures. Constructing a check dam, creating a
small water reservoir, or introducing other sustainable water conservation
systems would greatly help in securing a reliable water source throughout the
year.
Vision
To build a sustainable rural tourism and livelihood
model in Kanayankavayal that strengthens the local economy through the
integration of agriculture, entrepreneurship, and tourism.
The initiative envisions a self-reliant, financially literate, and
eco-conscious community, where farmers and homestay owners are empowered to
adopt Integrated Farming Systems (IFS), aquaponics, and micro-farming
practices within their homesteads.
A Common Facility Centre (CFC) equipped with a solar
dryer and basic processing units will support value addition, collective
marketing, and resource sharing. Through capacity building and financial
literacy training, the project aims to create an inclusive ecosystem where
every household — especially women and youth — can sustain
tourism-linked and farm-based livelihoods, while offering visitors an
authentic, responsible, and nature-connected rural experience.
Mission
- Empower local residents (Especially Women ) to establish and operate
government-classified homestays and farmstays through continuous
training, capacity building, and financial literacy programs that
strengthen self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
- Build capacity of farmers to develop and maintain Integrated Farming
System (IFS) units, aquaponics, and micro-farming models
within their homesteads, linking agricultural productivity with
tourism-based livelihoods.
- Establish a Common Facility Centre (CFC) with a solar dryer and value-addition units
to process and market local produce collectively, ensuring better income
generation and reduced post-harvest loss.
- Promote organic farming, beekeeping, poultry, and
traditional food production
as part of the homestay experience, enriching both farm income and visitor
engagement.
- Strengthen digital presence and social media
marketing to connect homestays,
farmers, and artisans directly with travellers seeking authentic village
experiences.
- Encourage responsible tourism through guided treks, away-day experiences, and
cultural programs that highlight Kanayankavayal’s natural beauty and
heritage while ensuring environmental conservation.
- Provide skill development training in hospitality, waste management, language
proficiency, and customer service to maintain high standards of
sustainable operations.
- Identify and promote local artisans, performers, and
craftspersons, integrating traditional
knowledge and creativity into the tourism and livelihood ecosystem.
- Support water conservation, waste management, and
biodiversity protection
to build a climate-resilient and sustainable community that thrives in
harmony with nature.

Problems Faced By Kanayankavayal
1. Panchalimedu experiences a water scarcity period
for about three months after January each year. This challenge is not limited
to Panchalimedu—many surrounding areas also face similar shortages. To ensure
water availability for the community and visitors during the dry season, it is
essential to implement effective water conservation measures. Constructing a
check dam, creating a small water reservoir, or introducing other sustainable
water conservation systems would greatly help in securing a reliable water
source throughout the year.
2. The road from Murinja River to Panchalimedu has
narrow S-curves, making it difficult for tourist buses to turn and climb. The
road needs widening at these curves.
3. Walls and illegally installed signboards on both
sides of the road block the scenic view and obstruct visibility; these need to
be removed.
4. Waste management in Panchalimedu is not effective
through panchayath activities alone; additional coordinated efforts and
community participation are needed to keep the tourist area clean and
waste-free.
From Mundakkayam, you can reach Enthayar via Koottickal in about half an hour. From there, a route climbs through the hills toward Urumbikkara.
This forest path, filled with rolling stones and steep ascents, is accessible only by jeep. The journey itself is an adventure—lasting about one and a half hours and shaking your whole body along the way. Alternatively, you can trek up the hills from Enthayar and reach the heights of Urumbikkara on foot. During the monsoon, this becomes a unique experience of rain trekking and mountain climbing. The climb to Urumbikkara is certainly not an easy one.
At higher altitudes, there is a reservoir called Madammakkulam. There also stands the old bungalow of Murphy Sahib, like a remnant of history. On the hillside rise two large rock formations known as “Irumulachikkallu,” resembling twin breasts. Slightly below them is a small Bhagavathi temple.
The twin rocks, the vast sky, the sweeping valleys, drifting clouds, rocky surfaces, and patches of grass—all create a breathtaking landscape. Rain in the hills is a special sight; you can watch it approaching from afar. Once the rain passes, the valleys shine as if they have just taken a refreshing bath.
A rain trek to Urumbikkara is truly an unforgettable experience.
